Cheetos Crunchy vs. Wise Cheez Doodles
When you’re looking to stuff your face with some tasty deliciousness in the form of a small, crunchy cheese snack, you’re really looking at two choices: Cheetos Crunchy or Wise cheez doodles? Here is my attempt to compare the two in a recent test for GrubDude.com.
First up: Cheetos Crunchy
I sampled the Net Wt. 1 oz Cheetos Crunchy snack bag. Cheetos informs us that they are “Cheese Flavored Snacks” that are “Made with REAL CHEESE!”
I had a hard time finding any real cheese in the ingredient list (does “Cheese Seasoning” really count?), but I did find “Artificial Color [Yellow 6]”, which everyone know is the best Yellow. Calories were 150 (Calories from fat 90), Total Fat 10g (Saturated 1.5g), Sodium 250mg, Carbohydrates 13g, and no Vitamins A or C, but I think we already knew that was the case. In terms of texture and taste, Cheetos is right on the mark. Very nice and crunchy with a great “cheese” taste. The shapes were slightly irregular without being too strange.
Cheetos has carefully positioned their mascot “Chester Cheetah” to be a “radical dude”, decked out in sunglasses on a skateboard, so they have a pretty good “cool” factor. They offer a “Guaranteed Fresh – Until Printed Date-“ and provide a phone number for you to call with questions/comments, but I’m not sure if you actually get to speak with Chester. Score 9/10
The Challenger: Wise cheez doodles
Cheese Flavored Corn Snack
I sampled the Net Wt. 0.875 oz Wise cheez doodles snack bag. Wise calls their offering a “Cheese Flavored Corn Snack”.
Once again, I had a hard time finding any real cheese in the ingredient list, but I did find a lot of “butter” references (Buttermilk, Butter, Butter Oil), and lots more Yellow Coloring (Yellow 6 and the lesser known but still popular Yellow 5 Lake and Yellow 6 Lake – where can I find this Yellow Lake and can you swim in it?). The snack size was slightly smaller so the Calories were 120 (Calories from fat 70), Total Fat 8g (Saturated higher at 2g, probably from all of the butter and yellow), Sodium 190mg, Carbohydrates 15g (slightly higher), and again no Vitamins A or C, but a small amount of calcium (again probably from all the butter-like stuff). In terms of texture and taste, I found the Wise cheez doodles to be slightly inferior to the Cheetos Crunchy, which were just a little crunchier and tastier. The shapes were similar which leads me to believe that they may both be manufactured in the same plant in China with slight variances in ingredients. Wise is attempting to create their own “cool” factor with their “cheez doodles Cheez Dudes”, who are actual cheese doodles that apparently have their own rock band and can sing and play drums. These guys are actually pretty funny and I find myself chuckling at their poses and their pseudo-metal band name font while I was crunching away, I think they still have a way to go to catch up to Chester.
Wise offers a more flowery guarantee, and tells us they will replace the bag if not completely satisfied, but they only offer a snail-mail address with no phone number, and I mean who has the time these days. Score 8.5/10
So there you have it, a pretty close contest. It seems that either snack will do if you’re looking to scratch the itch for crunchy cheese snacks with artificial ingredients and no nutritional value, which is usually the case for me by 3PM daily. Enjoy!
